On May 18th, the Pearland Chinese Association successfully hosted an engaging Rose Care Seminar at the Sunrise Lake Clubhouse.
Spring in Texas is fleeting, and many residents take the opportunity to beautify their homes with flowers and plants. Among them, the rose—known as the queen of flowers and the symbol of love—has countless admirers. However, roses can be challenging to grow because they are sensitive to heat, susceptible to pests, and require timely pruning.
To help the community better understand rose care, the Pearland Chinese Association invited “Rose Master” Sophie to give a special lecture. Sophie is one of the founding members of the association and currently serves as its treasurer. She maintains an impressive rose garden with more than 30 varieties and is an active member of both the American Rose Society and the Houston Rose Society.
What inspires many is that Sophie started her rose journey only two years ago—proof that becoming a “Rose Master” is no longer just a dream.
The lecture attracted many attendees who arrived well before the start time. Sophie delivered clear, concise, and comprehensive explanations, beginning with how to choose healthy rose plants and continuing through essential care and pruning techniques.
Highlights of the event included:
Participants listening intently
Warm and enthusiastic interactions
Live pruning demonstration using roses from the Houston Garden Center
“Shear, shear, all about shear”—a full explanation of pruning methods
Close-up viewing for better understanding
Sophie also brought her “magic rose bag” and introduced various mass-market tools that are easy to obtain and use. Learning proper techniques boosted everyone’s confidence in caring for their own roses.
The seminar was informative, practical, and inspiring. Many attendees commented that they couldn’t wait to go home and give their rose plants some well-deserved TLC.
