high school workload and extracurricular Forum (8.13.2022)

On August 13, 2022, the Pearland Chinese Association (PCA) hosted a forum on high school workload and extracurricular planning. The event was moderated by William and Alex Sun, with student speakers Sophia, Kate Liu, Bharat Salvady, Howard Shi, and Fred Guo. Forum notes were prepared by Derek Zhu.


The discussion focused on helping students navigate the transition from junior high to high school. Key topics included:

  • How class difficulty and workload change from JH to HS;

  • How to choose the right courses;

  • Recommended number and types of clubs to join;

  • Pros and cons of doubling up on math or science;

  • The importance of class rank and GPA, and related incentives;

  • How cell phone expectations differ between JH and HS;

  • Requirements and commitment level for joining the high school band;

  • Effective study tips and habits;

  • General opinions on study dates;

  • What the speakers would do differently if they could restart freshman year.


The speakers shared personal experiences and practical advice, providing valuable guidance for students preparing for or adapting to high school. The event was well received and offered meaningful insights for both students and parents.
