On August 5, 2023, the Pearland Chinese Association successfully hosted the first seminar titled “High School Seniors Share Their College Application Experiences.” Several recent graduates who had just completed the college application process and received offers from their chosen universities were invited to speak. The event drew many local families, creating an engaging and supportive atmosphere.
The seminar featured eight guest speakers, all of whom were graduating seniors from Pearland high schools. They are Jason Jiang, Donna Liu, and Divya Ramamurthy, who will be attending the University of Pennsylvania this fall; Jenny Yu, who will be attending MIT; Julie Liu, who will be attending New York University; Adith Ram, who will be attending Rice University; Kevin Chen, who will be attending the University of Texas at Austin; and Srikar Anantha, who will be attending Washington University in St. Louis.
The symposium was moderated by high school students Vincent Yang and Janie Chen.
The student speakers covered a wide range of topics, including college selection strategies, essay writing tips, time management, extracurricular planning, and preparation for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. They shared firsthand experiences and practical advice on staying productive during a demanding high school schedule, developing a unique personal profile, and avoiding common pitfalls in the application process.
The Q&A session was particularly lively. Parents and students asked thoughtful questions, and the speakers provided detailed answers about application procedures, choosing a major, campus life expectations, and managing stress. Many attendees noted that hearing directly from students who recently went through the process gave them clearer insights and greater confidence.
The Pearland Chinese Association remains committed to supporting educational growth within the community. This seminar not only offered valuable guidance to students preparing for the upcoming application season but also strengthened the sense of connection and mutual support among families. PCA looks forward to continuing to host youth-focused educational events to help students pursue their academic goals.
